Rover is the yellow dog with the red collar. Default Search Companion on Windows XP. You typed what you wanted. He sniffed the disk. Sometimes he found it. Usually he smiled anyway.
He started in Microsoft Bob (1995) as the house guide. Bob flopped in a year. Rover did not die. In 2001 he came back on XP as the search assistant, built on Microsoft Agent (.acs). Same tech family as Clippy and Merlin.
Comic Sans exists because a Microsoft designer saw Rover speaking in Times New Roman and said no. The font missed Bob, then leaked into the rest of windows anyway.
Windows 7 killed the Search Companion. The puppy was gone. The files were still there. Rover just stopped getting hired.
Search companions on XP: Rover (the default), Merlin, Courtney, Earl. Office had Clippy. Same cartoon-helper era. Rover outlived Bob. Then Windows 7 shipped without him.
